The Challenge

Like many institutions, Newcastle College was navigating challenges related to:

  • Student wellbeing and mental health pressures
  • Engagement and motivation during the academic year
  • Supporting student persistence and retention
  • Ensuring students were aware of and actively using existing support services

The institution was seeking a solution that would complement existing initiatives while providing students with a practical, everyday tool to support success.

The Approach

Semester Student Planner worked closely with the student affairs team and supporting functions across the institution to co-create a bespoke planner aligned with their student success strategy. The process included:

  • In-depth consultation with student success and wellbeing teams
  • Alignment with existing support services, resources, and institutional priorities
  • Selection of coaching, wellbeing, and personal development frameworks relevant to their students
  • Design iterations to ensure relevance, usability, and student engagement

The result was a planner designed not just to organize time, but to actively reinforce positive behaviors and help students take ownership of their growth.

What They Said

What the Institution Said

We brought in Semester to support with our students experience as we know from the past, that students struggle with time management and organisation and tackling these issues early on mean greater student outcomes. The content of the workshops is great as it is relevant to all students no matter on their chosen subject of study. The workshops really help students see the benefits of organisation and how achievable a degree can be. Semester are so friendly and approachable and supportive, having been in that position as students themselves, but also listening to changes, trends and what students and our University Centre want and need. This makes the whole process a strong collaboration and provides for successful planners and workshops that are well utilised. The students found the sessions relatable, helpful and engaging. The students have requested more sessions with semester as they felt it supported their mindset for studying the degree and their personal wellbeing, from them being more organised and feeling that they are capable of completing a degree. We intend to run further workshops with semester half way through the students degrees and also to work with semester in the same way next year. The bonus of the planners and workshops supporting each other is an additional bonus.
