Allegheny College

Meadville, Pennsylvania

Allegheny College is one of America's oldest liberal arts colleges, founded in 1815 and based in Meadville, Pennsylvania. With around 1,300 undergraduates and an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, it's known for its close-knit community, strong culture of student support, and a distinctive approach to teaching, consistently recognised nationally for undergraduate research and innovation. The college also runs a dedicated "Life Design" programme that helps students build identity, clarify their values and direction, and approach their wellbeing with intention, reflecting a genuine institutional commitment to helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

The Challenge

Allegheny College's Life Design programme, part of The Well, asks students to reflect on how their daily actions align with their values, what success looks like for them, and what gives their life purpose, something the college sees as discovered through relationships and service. It's a genuinely distinctive part of the Allegheny experience.

The challenge was carrying that reflective, purpose-driven work into students' everyday lives, rather than leaving it in the workshops and conversations where it began. Allegheny wanted:

  • A way to bring the substance of Life Design into daily routines, not just isolated sessions
  • A tool robust enough to support first-year students from the very start, at Gator Welcome Weekend
  • Something that could blend Allegheny's own Life Design content with a proven framework for building daily habits

The Approach

Semester Student Planner worked with Allegheny College to bring the work of the Life Design department directly into a custom planner, blending it with the Semester framework so that reflection on values, purpose and wellbeing becomes a daily habit rather than a set of standalone workshops.

  • Allegheny's Life Design workshops have been woven directly into the planner's content
  • The planner blends Life Design's reflective approach with Semester's planning and coaching framework, turning purpose-driven reflection into an everyday practice
  • Planners are given to first-year students during Gator Welcome Weekend, embedding the habit from the very start of their time at Allegheny
